Night writing, Kansas

NaPoWriMo_Day 2

The prairie fire
is so bright
even the stars
turn to look.

I look for its starter
or someone tending it.

No one.

It advances
one slow step.

Once-tall grasses
are reduced to nubs.

Smoke trails out
over the hills.

I know there is a poem here
hiding around the unburned edges.

Instead I stare.

Whatever I wrote
would be illegible
in daylight.
